After all, Killswitch Engage was a difficult record to make, and during its gestation, the band faced some of the greatest challenges of their 10-year career. Support In an effort to break the mold of their last two similarly structured albums, 2004′s The End of Heartache and 2006′s As Daylight Dies, Killswitch started writing new material in September 2008 and wrangling in ideas through the end of December. In the end, they demoed 16 songs that incorporated a stunning, virtuosic array of jazzy prog rock, atmospheric psychedelia, and ’80s fist-in-the-sky metal, along with their trademark thrash and metalcore parts.

Then, the bandmates upped the ante by leaving the safety of their home away from home, Westfield, Massachusetts’ Zing studio, and working for the first time with an outside producer, hit maker Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, AC/ DC, Mastodon). KILLS WITCH ENGAGE AREN’T JUST RELIEVED THAT THE ARDUOUS PROCESS OF MAKING THEIR NEW ALBUM IS NOW A THING OF THE PAST, BUT THAT THE EVENTS THAT INSPIRED IT ARE, TOO

WHEN IT COMES TO BIG-PACKAGE tours, Killswitch Engage know the ropes. Since 2001, they’ve played Ozzfest, Vans Warped Tour, Taste of Chaos, Music as a Weapon, and now they’re rocking the main stage at the second Rockstar Mayhem Festival. Name Brands But while they’ve made more big-bill appearances than many of their peers, Killswitch have yet to headline. That means they get 45 minutes max onstage, usually play before dusk, and face audiences not specifically there for them. Still, there is one major perk. Being done so early means more time to drink.

By the time the crowd heads for the parking lot every night, most of Killswitch—with the exception of sober vocalist Howard Jones—are usually hammered, and the rest of the evening is a blur of drinks and laughs — especially for guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, who may just be the funniest dude in metal. Turntables He plays shows wearing everything from hot pants and capes to pink cowboy hats and tutus, he’s drawn penises and swastikas in Sharpie marker on passed-out friends, and he routinely goes on treasure hunts around venues and hides the objects he finds —chairs, lamps, potted plants, even a football down marker—in his bandmates’ bunks. A tour and not be the heaviest band out there. We’ve got blast beats and tons of double bass! It’s cool, though, that there’s a tour with bands like Job for a Cowboy and Behemoth, who are significantly heavier than All That Remains, and it’s still commercially viable. MP3 Music Downloads

What’s the difference for you guys between a festival show and a regular show?

The only difference is that we have to play a shorter set, so we’re limited on the number of songs we can do. Usually we select our most aggressive songs, but when you’re playing with Cannibal Corpse, you kind of have to adjust. With the economy sucking so hard. Mayhem could be the only show some fans end up going to this summer. Does that put any pressure on you guys? For sure. For lots of people it could be their one big thing for the summer. They’ll probably cook out on July 4 and then come to Mayhem.
